About:
The Institute of Biology and Animal Nutrition (IBNA – Balotesti) is the most important research unit and the only one National Institute in the field of animal science in Romania. It is the only institute performing complex research-development activity in biology and nutrition of all species and categories of farm animals (from research to extension). The main areas of IBNA activity are:
- Scientific research: (i) biology studies: relationships nutrition-immunology; biomarkers in response to feed; (ii) interrelation environment – animal – human (e.g. reducing greenhouse gases emissions towards environment, etc.); (iii) implementation of genomic information and new traits in breeding programs for local breeds; (iv) investigation in animal physiology and nutrition to valorize local feeding resources and new feeds, to increase farm animal competitiveness on the market and the quality of animal products. The research activities are sustained by three main research laboratories: Physiology of Nutrition, Animal Biology, Animal Nutrition &Biotechnology.
- Development compartment: the institute has a feed mill for all the species and categories of farm animals. The feed production consists in: compound feeds, protein-vitamin-mineral concentrates, vitamin-mineral mixtures, medicated premixes.
The institute has very good facilities for extension / training activities and for organizing professional events (multimedia amphitheater, meeting halls, good level of IT equipment, permanent Internet access).
It also has a strong national network of beneficiaries (SME’s) due to its traditional position as leader in animal nutrition. The research activity of our institute is conducted mostly within the National Plan of Research – Development and Innovation through various financing programs (20-30 projects running). The institute has also been involved in international projects (FAO, Word Bank, EU-FP6-FP7, Horizon 2020, Life, COST networks, regional & bilateral projects).
Role in the project:
In the RUMINATE project, IBNA will lead the design and implementation of the small-scale in vivo feeding trials. The IBNA`s focus will be on assessing the impact of nutritional strategies on animal performance, welfare, and environmental footprint Also, IBNA will be involved in other tasks, like assessment of the current landscape of livestock farming systems and nutritional schemes; sampling for the characterization of animal genetic background; provision of data on animal health for the development of guidelines and formulation of low-emission and heat-resilient nutritional protocols; sheep phenotypic data provision; demo scientific support to demonstrate the integrated genomic and nutritional solutions; evaluation of real-world system response and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of implemented innovations; supporting the policy activities
